How about some info on what people are doing to supplement their karate training, such as running?

Here's one: Ash, Julian, Big Mick, Mix, and myself made up an NIAKW relay team in the Belfast marathon (www.belfastcitymarathon.com) on May 7th this year. We crossed the finish line in a time of 3 hours 28 minutes and 30 seconds, and gained a top 100 position out of over 1600 relay teams!

What's anyone else been up to, or have planned?

On June 23rd, I joined a couple of guys from Northbrook Technology to complete a cycle from Belfast, down the Ards Peninsula, to Portaferry, and back. It was a round trip of 80 miles, and took me just under 6 hours. I had been enjoying it up until the hill on the return leg, out of Newtownards, which just seemed to keep on rising!

The Tour of the Lough should be coming up later this month (August) - it'll be somewhere in the region of 110 miles. Anyone interested??

Anyone hear about the Greencastle 5 mile road race? It's held on December 26th every year, and for the 2007 race myself, Mix, and Julian decided to enter (Maurice entered last year but couldn't attend this race). Five miles doesn't sound too bad, but it's not a flat course, and that last hill seems to never end! Mix got the fastest time for the club, with a time of 42.5 minutes.

Hopefully we'll get a proper article about it on the website at some point, but in the mean time the official website of the run can be found at www.greencastle5.com.

I heard about it had a few cousins in Cregan who ran it. Eugene Hamill wanted to tell you about http://www.lapthelough.org/ and http://www.castlehillcc.org/. Plenty of cycling goodness, hope your keeping well Mark.

The Omagh Half Marathon and Fun Run took place on 29th March this year. Taking part in the full 13 mile event were Mix and Maurice, while myself and Julian entered the "Fun Run". Think I can honestly say, that I failed to see the "fun" in that event! Should have got more training in, I think. Results can be found on the Omagh Harriers web site here: http://omaghaccouk.web139.discountasp.net/omagh_half_marathon/results.aspx

PS. Not sure if I'd capable of the lap of the lough just yet Martin...

So then a wee update from the Running Society from of NIAKW - half marathon again this year. Me and Maurice ran it. my god it was TOUGH!! did it 6.5 minutes quicker than last year but the elusive 2 hour barrier remains elusive!! Maurice was a little slower than last year but still had a good strong finish. Next up? probably Strabane 10k - July??

And i concur with Marks assessment that the Greencastle 5 was NOT A FLAT ROUTE!!! I got club record on it alright...but a little training should improve on that time in 2008.....and Jimmy has threatened to show us how its done!!

Also, well done to everyone who took part in teh demo given in Derry on Sat 19th Apr 2008 in aid of Altnagelvin Breast Screening Unit. A bit of a rushed job, but i think we did excellently well for having organised the menu only 45 minutes before travelling to the venue. Photos to be uploaded to website shortly....as soon as i email them to Marti....they are en route.
