Beginner's Notes: The Dojo / Training Hall:
- When entering or leaving the dojo, students should bow from the waist.
- When lining up, the highest grade stands at the front on the right side, as you look toward the instructor. The next highest is to his left, and so on, until the line is full then the next line back follows the same order.
- If you are late and the class has started then do your own warm ups off the training area, kneel and bow, then wait kneeling for the instructor to allow you to join. No matter what grade you are you should join at the back of the group. Always walk around the outside to get to your place, not through the middle.
- When the class begins students should refrain from talking, eating, smoking, wandering about, or any activity not being taught in the class.
History
N.I.A.K.W. was formed in the early 1980s in Omagh leisure centre, with subsequent branches in Dungannon and Gortin.
Competitons
The club has performed well over the years in competitons in Ireland and the UK.
Local Success at BWKS National Championships
On Saturday 8th November a 13-strong contingent from Omagh and Dungannon Karate Clubs (N.I.A.K.W.), travelled London to compete in the annual BWKS National Championships. How ever, an unlucky 13 was for a time re-deuced to 12 angry men as one of the team rushed back to meet his wife and two bleary-eyed daughters, to collect photographic ID and make the flight out with just three minutes to spare before take off.
Restored to full strength, confidence was high as the N.I.A.K.W. team was determined to make 2003 an even more successful year than 2002 at the National Championships.
Sunday was competition day and N.I.A.K.W. had entrants in every senior male event. The three-man team event was first on the mats. The club had sent two teams for this event. The ‘A’ team comprised Julian McKeown, Michael Donnelly (1st kyu), Maurice Kelly with Robbie Brown to be called upon as a substitute in the later rounds. The N.I.A.K.W. ‘B’ team was made up of Seamus McCullagh, Mark Phillips and Michael Phillips with Daire O’Doherty a sub.
Although the first team made it to the final, the ‘B’ team found themselves out at the semi-final stages, and fighting for third place against the fancied English team. Having secured third sport with fine performances from M E Phillips and S McCullagh, there were high hopes for fist place in this event. This result was duly delivered as the ‘A’ team won two matches (the first of which was a spectacular 8-0 drubbing dealt out by Brown) and drew one.
